Snow removal for winter: how to choose a provider and what to agree
Arrange snow removal before the first snow. How to compare quotes, what the agreement should include and why roof snow clearing is a job for a professional.
Every winter the same surprise: it snows. The good news is that snow work can be handled without you going out with a shovel at six in the morning. The best time to arrange it, though, is before the first snow, before the providers' calendars fill up.
What is snow work usually?
- Ploughing and shovelling: yard, driveway, steps and walkways.
- Gritting or salting when it is slippery.
- Clearing snow off the roof when too much builds up.
- Hauling snow away if the piles take up space.
What to agree before you order
- Which areas are covered? Yard, car park, steps, the pavement in front of the house. Take a photo or draw a map.
- When does the provider come? Agree a clear trigger ("when snow exceeds the agreed depth") and a time limit ("before 7 a.m.") if the morning matters to you.
- What does gritting include? Is it in the price or charged separately?
- Pricing: a seasonal contract (fixed price for the winter), a price per visit or an hourly rate. Ask what happens in an exceptionally snowy winter.
- A stand-in: who does the job if the provider is ill or the equipment breaks down?
- Insurance and liability: if ploughing damages a fence or paving, who pays?
- Payment method and invoicing.
Clearing roof snow is a job for a professional
Working on a roof is dangerous, and falling snow can hurt people and damage property. Do not do it yourself unless you are sure about safety, and order it from a provider who has the right equipment and insurance.
How to compare quotes
Do not look at the price alone. Compare: whether the price covers all the agreed areas, the gritting and the roof, how quickly the provider reacts, and whether the service is a seasonal contract or a one-off. Ask for clarification in writing if needed.

In the request, give the size of the yard, the surface (asphalt, stone, gravel), the postal code and the wanted start. Providers in your area send a quote, and you can compare them calmly over a cup of coffee. The service is free for customers and does not commit you to anything.
