How to request a renovation quote and compare quotes
A good quote request saves time and money. How to describe the renovation, what to attach and how to compare quotes fairly.
A renovation rarely starts with quotes, but a good quote always starts with a good quote request. The more precisely you say what you want, the better the provider can price the job, and the price does not change with a surprise halfway through.
1. Describe the job as if you were telling a neighbour
Say what needs to be done and why. "Renovate the bathroom" is too little. Better: "Bathroom of 4 m², floor and wall tiles replaced, old building, the floor drain stays." Also mention what you do not want to change.
2. Attach photos and measurements
A photo often says more than a paragraph of text. Take photos of the current state from different angles and measure the most important dimensions. On Palvelunyt.fi you can attach photos and PDF files directly to the request.
3. Give the schedule and budget if you know them
The wanted start and finish help the provider judge whether they can fit it in. A budget range does not make you an easy target: it helps the provider suggest a solution that suits your wallet. If you do not know your budget, say so.
4. Ask what the price includes
Before you compare quotes, find out for each one:
- Does the price include materials or only the labour?
- Is the price inclusive of VAT?
- What about demolition, waste removal and final cleaning?
- Is the price fixed or an estimate, and what happens if the job grows?
- When could the provider start and how long will the job take?
The Consumer Protection Act has provisions on how an estimate relates to the final price. Check the current information from the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (kkv.fi) or consumer advice (kuluttajaneuvonta.fi).
5. Compare like with like
The cheapest quote is not always the most affordable. If one quote is clearly lower than the others, check what is missing: materials, demolition, cleaning or a warranty. If needed, ask the provider to clarify in writing.
6. Check the provider
Ask for the company's business ID (Y-tunnus) and check that the provider has the permits and insurance needed for the trade (for example, electrical work requires authorisation). On Palvelunyt.fi every provider applies with a business ID and an administrator reviews the application, but still ask for more when needed.
7. Agree in writing
Once you have chosen a provider, agree the price, scope and schedule in writing. The messages on Palvelunyt.fi are good enough to start with, and they stay in the conversation.
