Household tax credit: what to know before you order
The household tax credit can lower the cost of work done at your home. What it covers, what you need and where to find up-to-date information.
The household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys) is a tax deduction that can give you back part of the cost of work done at your home. It is one reason many people have cleaning, yard work or renovations done by a professional.
This text is general and contains no amounts or percentages, because they change. Always check the current information from the Finnish Tax Administration.
What does the credit usually cover?
- The labour share, not materials. The invoice must show work and supplies separately so that the deductible share is visible.
- Work done at home or at a holiday home, for example cleaning, yard work, renovations and care services. The exact types of work and the limits are on the Tax Administration's pages.
- A provider who is in the prepayment register or who otherwise meets the conditions for the credit. Ask about this before you order.
What to do when ordering
- Ask whether the provider is in the prepayment register. It affects whether you can get the credit.
- Ask for an invoice that separates labour and supplies. Keep the invoice and the receipt.
- Pay according to the invoice. The credit requires that the work has been paid for. Check the conditions on the payment method with the Tax Administration.
- Claim the credit in your tax return by the deadline. You will find instructions in the Tax Administration's services.
Where to find up-to-date information
The amounts, percentages and types of work change. Always read the current guidance from the Tax Administration: vero.fi, search term household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys). If you are unsure, ask the Tax Administration's advice service or a tax expert.
What about Palvelunyt.fi?
Palvelunyt.fi does not handle payments and does not give tax advice. When you request a quote, you can mention in the request that you want to know whether the provider is entitled to the credit. The provider is responsible for their own invoicing.
