A quote without an invoice: why it ends up costing more

Cash work with no invoice seems cheap, but the consumer carries the risk. How to spot the grey economy and what an invoice gives you.

"If you pay cash, the price is lower." The offer sounds tempting, but its price is not only what you pay the provider.

What an invoice gives you

  • Proof of the deal. If the job fails, you have a document of what was agreed and what you paid.
  • Consumer rights. The Consumer Protection Act protects you when you buy a service from a company. Without an invoice it is hard to show that those rights apply.
  • The household tax credit. If the job may qualify for the household tax credit, you need an invoice and a provider who meets the conditions. More in the text "Household tax credit".
  • Liability. The company is responsible for the work and often has insurance that covers damage.

How to spot the grey economy

  • The price is clearly lower than the others, and the reason given is "no need to pay taxes".
  • The provider does not give a business ID or an invoice.
  • Payment is wanted in cash or to an account that is not the company's.
  • The provider does not want to put the agreement or messages in writing.

Why it is a risk for you

If damage occurs, for example a water leak or a work accident at your home, getting compensation can be difficult. Illegal trade also distorts competition against honest business owners.

This is a general guide, not legal advice. More information: kuluttajaneuvonta.fi and vero.fi.

What to do

  1. Ask for the quote in writing and compare at least two.
  2. Ask for the business ID and check the company at ytj.fi.
  3. Agree that you will receive an invoice for the work.
  4. Pay according to the invoice, and do not pay large sums in advance.

Providers apply with a business ID, and quotes and conversations are kept in the service. It does not remove the need to check the invoice, but it gives a clear starting point.
