The quote the customer picks: three things decide
A small business owner's guide to a good quote: reply quickly, say what the price includes and write so that the customer trusts you.
A customer often gets several quotes for the same job. Besides the price, the choice is influenced by who replied first, who sounded reliable and whose quote made it clear what you get. The good news: three things are enough.
1. Reply quickly
The one who replies first does not always win, but the one who replies last often loses. Reply to the request within the same day if you can. A short "Thanks for the request, here is my quote" is better than a perfect answer a week later.
2. Write what the price includes
The quote form has a price (VAT included) and a message. Use the message to:
- repeat the job in your own words ("I will wash 12 windows inside and out, two floors.")
- say what the price includes and what it does not (materials, waste, cleaning, travel)
- say what is a fixed price and what is an estimate
- say when you can start and how long the job takes
3. Give a reason to trust you
One sentence is enough: experience ("I have done this for eight years"), insurance, similar earlier jobs or a reference to an industry certificate if you have one. Do not exaggerate and do not promise what you cannot keep.
Example
Hi Maija, thanks for the request! I will wash your 12 windows inside and out, two floors. The price of €180 includes VAT, equipment and travel. I can come next Tuesday or Wednesday, and the job takes about three hours. If you like, I can wash the balcony glazing at the same time for a separate price. Best regards, Pekka, Pekan Pesu Oy
What to avoid
- A text that is too long and generic, which could be about any job.
- "Call me" with no reason. The conversation takes place in the service's messages.
- A vague price ("about, and it depends"). If you cannot give a fixed price, state the upper limit of the estimate.
- Grovelling or pressure. The customer chooses in peace.
After the quote
When the customer accepts the quote, the conversation opens. Reply quickly there too, agree the schedule and keep your promises. After the job the customer can leave a review, and a good review is your best marketing.
